In Memoriam
----------------------{Dedicated to the memory of Thomas Bealin Kelly, Arthur Street, Ballina, who gave so much of his time and energy to the erection of the Maid of Eireann (Humbert Monument) in the years of 1898 and 1899, and to all things of national importance. He died on the 14th February, 1909, and is buried in the old cemetery (along the roadway) of Old Leigue}. (P.J.C.)
The faith that fills the soul of Spring
Has kindled hope so bright,
O’erspreading love and charity
More freely with delight.
A thought unfolds a citizen,
So cheery, brave and kind.
By faith and hope and charity
Endearingly entwined,
Around the west we knew him best
Like sunshine at noon-day.
Infusing with a patriot’s mind
New vigour on his way.
Keenly now though many miss
Each virtue that he bore,
Lov’d memories of his name shall live
Long years to cherish more;
Ye winds that fan the monument
By T. B. Kelly raised,
Advance the name of Ninety-eight.
Let Humber e’er be praised.
Lovingly has the patriot’s grave
In Leigue been kept with care;
Nor shall we cease to raise for him
A fervent Irish prayer.
John Ginty
Leigue, Ballina.
