“Juno and the Paycock” (An appreciation)

Ballina Dramatic Society:
“Juno and the Paycock”
(An appreciation)

-----------------------

AN all-star cast . . . a presentation prime,
A masterpiece of moving mood and mime;
Thus briefly but inadequately paid
A compliment of “Juno” now being play’

The Ballina Dramatic Corps superb,
Drew cultured crowds to queue the eager kerb . . .
May we more often find such festal fare—
Our local team triumphant debonair!

Collette, bright star of historic art,
And Bill naïve: each played a perfect part,
With verve vivacious Nuala falsely true
Nigh robbed “darling” Dermot of his “dew”!

To Ann, embarrassed maid, our gratitude:
She lived her lines as but an artiste could.
With tearful trueness Anthony portrays
The dreadful Dolours of those terror days.

To Kathleen, weeping mother, as to Sean
And rival Aiden in their footlights dawn,
Great credit goes, nor yet forget the gun . . .
For Tony, Mick and Noel won well done!

Producer Desmond and “remover” John, Convincing.
John knew just what each should do;
Marie and Gerry propped a splendid set . . .
With Eithne aiding when all eyes were wet.

The men were good and very good were they . . .
Bill’s mourning mock and Dermot’s drunken day.
But as, Collette none ever could surpass .  . .
Nor Nuala’s “Blackbird” piping o’er her “Glass”.

Assuming accent hinders one’s clan . . .
Too mild a suitor hates to hurt a hand . . .
’Tis hard to haul an armless man right out . . .
And “Oola” labelled bottles are not stout!

’Mong us who saw this play on Abbey boards
Our youthful talent loud laudation scores:
For stage acumen and nigh faultless show
O Ballina Dramatic Corps, bravo!
