Sullivan’s Public House, Old
Garden Street, Ballina. (This building in years gone by was the home
and shop of one Tom Hughes, who kept a grain-buying store on
the site where James Forde lived on the Killala Road. When this old building
was being demolished to make way for the building of the Savoy Cinema, the
workers started with the straw covered roof. They had not got very far when a
hoard of sovereigns fell on the ground and caused consternation. When word got
out the place was overran by searchers, and quite a number of them found the
odd coin).
